One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus was published on May 30th 2017 by Delacorte Press and is a young adult novel. One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide. On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule. Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess. Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing. Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher. And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose? Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

My thoughts: ONE OF US IS LYING is a cross between The Breakfast Club and Pretty Little Liars. This book starts out like a true eighties movie with five students heading to detention. Then someone (Simon) dies while in detention making this book have a Pretty Little Liars twists that will have you second guessing who done it to the very end. Was it one of the others in detention that day? Mr. Avery the teacher, Bronwyn the brain, Addy the beauty, Nate the criminal, Cooper the athlete or Simon the outcast? You never know who might be the actual suspect unless you really pay attention to all the clues. When a popular nightly television show called Mikhail Powers Investigates starts shedding light on the case the drama and suspense kicks up a notch making you wonder who really done it. The ending is a huge surprise that I kinda saw coming but at the same time didn’t and it really threw me for a loop. While the setting is a typical high school, there are scenes that take you different places around the city of Bayview which added to the overall story. McManus has really out done herself with the characters in this novel. They have detailed backstories that slowly come to light throughout this novel helping to add suspense and depth to the overall story making this a must read young adult novel. ** I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. **
